## What mattresses do you sell?

We make three mattresses, all handcrafted in Sydney with honeycomb pocket springs. All three use a natural latex comfort layer, a zippered cover, and the same honeycomb pocket spring design. The model difference is how many micro spring layers sit on top. Your firmness range still decides which spring tension and latex firmness you get.

**Cooper** (from $1,050) — No micro spring layers — a direct feel with less cushioning.

**Aurora** (from $1,550) — One micro spring layer. Balanced cushioning.

**Cloud** (from $2,050) — Two micro spring layers. Maximum cushioning. Our most popular.

Each micro spring layer adds $500. You can move between models by adding or removing micro spring layers. Changing firmness ranges is separate and may need springs or latex swapped.

See **Product Prices** for current pricing.

## What's the difference between the models?

All three models use the same basic design: honeycomb pocket springs, a natural latex comfort layer, and a zippered cover. The model difference is micro spring layers. The firmness range decides the spring tension and latex firmness.

No mattress is 'better' than the other. It all comes down to sleep preference and feel.

**Cooper** — Responsive cushioning, firmness range 8-19

- 5cm natural latex comfort layer + purple foam buffer over springs
- No micro spring layers — for a direct and responsive feel
- Firmness starts at level 8 — medium latex pairs with the spring unit for a supportive surface

**Aurora** — Balanced cushioning, firmness range 5-19

- 5cm natural latex comfort layer
- 1 layer of micro springs (1,600 on queen) for pressure relief

**Cloud** — Maximum cushioning, firmness range 2-19. Our most popular.

- 5cm natural latex comfort layer
- 2 layers of micro springs (3,200 on queen) for maximum pressure relief

## Which model should I choose?

All three models use the same material types — honeycomb pocket springs, natural latex, and a zippered cover. You're choosing how much cushioning you want from micro springs.

**Cooper** — Responsive cushioning. No micro springs — a direct feel with less cushioning. Best for those who prefer sleeping "on" the mattress rather than "in" it.

**Aurora** — Balanced cushioning. 1,600 micro springs (queen). A balanced option for those who want some pressure relief.

**Cloud** — Maximum cushioning. 3,200 micro springs (queen). Our most popular. The extra micro springs cushion shoulders and hips, which is why side sleepers tend to prefer it.

All three use natural latex and the same modular cover/adjustment system. Because they share the same cover and modular layout, you can move between models by adding or removing micro spring layers. Moving into a different firmness range is separate and may need springs or latex swapped.

## How do the springs work?

Pocket springs and micro springs get your body into the right shape. That's their job — support and contour.

The latex is just there so you can't feel the springs. **Remember:** more foam = more heat.

**The structure (all models):**

- Bottom: honeycomb pocket springs matched to your body weight (we use 986 springs in a queen – most companies give you 768 springs in a row layout)
- Middle: micro springs for cushioning (Cooper uses purple foam instead, Aurora 1600, Cloud 3200)
- Top: 5cm natural latex — latex firmness is matched to the firmness range

**Main spring technical specs:**

| Spring unit | Wire gauge | Turns |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Soft | 1.6mm | 7-turn |
| Medium | 1.7mm | 7-turn |
| Firm | 1.7mm | 6-turn |
| Very firm | 1.8mm | 6-turn |

**Latex technical specs:**

All latex is GOLS-certified natural latex.

| Latex type | Density |
| --- | --- |
| Soft | 55kg/m³ |
| Medium | 70kg/m³ |
| Firm | 90kg/m³ |

The Cooper uses purple foam above the spring unit for a direct, responsive connection between you and the springs — no micro spring layer in between. In Aurora and Cloud, the micro spring layers serve that buffering role instead.

The purple foam is a spacer — it holds the space where micro spring layers would go. When you move from Cooper to Aurora, or Aurora to Cloud, we remove the purple foam and replace it with a micro spring layer.

In Aurora and Cloud, the latex moulds to the micro springs. The micro springs mould to the pocket springs. Your shoulders and hips are more cushioned — that's why side sleepers tend to prefer these models.

**Why honeycomb?**

I arrange the springs in a honeycomb pattern so I can fit more in. This is what the high-end makers do — Hastens, Vispring, Savoir. More springs = more elasticity = better contour around your body.

Elasticity is actually measurable — it's called point elasticity. The more elastic the surface, the better it wraps around you without resistance. That's comfort.

## What firmness should I get?

See the **Ausbeds Fitting System** for recommendations based on your weight and sleep preferences.

## What's included with every mattress?

- 7-month trial
- 2 free component swaps during trial
- 10-year warranty
- Free factory pickup from Marrickville
- Setup, unpacking, and packaging removal

**Delivery:** $2/km in Sydney (live within 15km of Marrickville? It's free!), from $190 interstate (Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra). Full-size delivery to your room — we never compress mattresses. See **Delivery Information** for exact rates.

## Do you sell bed bases?

Yes — Sydney only, and only with a mattress purchase.

Our Slimline Bed Base is a solid, sturdy foundation for our mattresses. We don't manufacture the bed base ourselves — they're built for us by a third-party supplier. See **Product Prices** for current pricing.

We no longer sell bed bases outside Sydney. If you're outside Sydney, see **Bed Bases** for the current list of recommended options. Short version: solid timber is ideal, thick plywood is fine if it doesn't flex, and avoid flexible or thin slats.

### Slimline Bed Base specs

- **Material:** Solid pine, Australian-made
- **Dimensions:** 30cm total height with 17cm legs
- **Assembly:** Legs removable, base is one piece (King is 2 pieces, split down the middle)
- **Storage:** Plenty of room underneath

### What base do I need?

A solid, flat foundation with slats that don't flex. Flexible slats are the main problem — they sag and cause back pain. See **Bed Bases** for detailed recommendations and solutions.

## Model updates (February 2026)

We've made some changes to the Cooper and Aurora. If you bought either model before February 2026, here's what changed and what it means for you.

**Cooper — new construction**

Older Coopers used polyfoam as the comfort layer. The new Cooper uses a 5cm natural latex comfort layer like the Aurora and Cloud, plus purple foam over the spring unit. All three current models now use natural latex. The model difference is micro spring layers, and the latex firmness still depends on the firmness range.

**Cooper — firmness range narrowed**

The Cooper used to run from firmness 5-16. It now starts at Medium (level 8). The reason is simple — the Cooper doesn't have micro springs, and uses a firm polyfoam layer between the springs and latex.

If you're under 70kg and want less cushioning than the Cloud, the Aurora (firmness 5-19) is the right fit — its single micro spring layer buffers the springs so we can use softer latex.

**Aurora — firmness range narrowed at the soft end**

The Aurora used to run from firmness 2-19. It now runs 5-19 — the softest levels (2-4, Very Soft) are available in the Cloud only, which runs the full 2-19.

**Existing customers with older models**

If you have a pre-February 2026 Cooper or Aurora and want to make adjustments, call the showroom on (02) 8999 3333. The components in older models are different, so we need to look at your specific setup and advise the best path — whether that's a component swap, an upgrade, or just a simple adjustment.

**Discontinued models (Jasper and Sienna)**

The Jasper and Sienna are discontinued and no longer in production. Their construction is different from our current range. If you have a Jasper or Sienna and need adjustment advice, troubleshooting, or replacement parts, contact the showroom on (02) 8999 3333 or email sales@ausbeds.com.au. We'll need to look at your specific mattress to give personalised advice.

---

## Do you have sales or discounts?

No. Our prices stay the same all year. We don't inflate prices to offer fake "50% off" sales. The price you see is what you pay.

---

## Sizes We Make

We make standard Australian sizes only: Single, King Single, Double, Queen, King.

No custom sizes, Superking, or zip-together mattresses. See **Dimensions & Sizes** for full size specifications.

---

## Do the mattresses work on adjustable bases?

Yes, no problems at all. See **Bed Bases** for more details.

---

## Model comparison - quick summary

All three models use the same material types and modular design. The model difference is cushioning from micro springs. The firmness range still controls spring tension and latex firmness:

- **Cooper** — Responsive cushioning. No micro springs. Firmness range 8-19.
- **Aurora** — Balanced cushioning. 1600 micro springs (queen). Firmness range 5-19.
- **Cloud** — Maximum cushioning. 3200 micro springs (queen). Firmness range 2-19. Our most popular.

All our mattresses use the same modular system. You can move between models by changing micro spring layers. Changing firmness ranges is a separate component swap. See **Mattress Recommendations** for guidance on which to start with.

---

## Sleeping position guide

**Back sleepers:** Cooper or Aurora is typically best. Provides support with more balanced cushioning.

**Side sleepers:** Cloud is preferred. The extra micro springs cushion shoulders and hips better.

**Front/stomach sleepers:** Aurora or Cooper on the firmer end. Too soft and your back can arch.

**Combination sleepers:** Any model works — the adjustability means you can dial it in regardless of which model you choose.

These are starting points. Your weight matters more than sleep position for firmness selection.

---

## Are your mattresses zoned?

**No, and that's intentional.**

Zoning is where different parts of the mattress have different firmness (firmer in the middle, softer at shoulders). Most manufacturers use zones because it sounds good in marketing — "9-zone" sounds more impressive than "3-zone".

**Why zones don't work:**

Zones assume everyone's body is the same shape. But women typically have larger hips and smaller shoulders than men. Men have the opposite. They'd need opposite zoning — so someone always loses.

When we used zones, our returns went up. When we stopped, returns went down. The world's best mattress makers (Hastens — 170 years old, Vispring, Savoir) all use single-zone springs. The most expensive mattress in the world ($400,000) is single-zoned.

**What we do instead:**

We match spring tension to your body weight. A 55kg person gets softer springs. A 110kg person gets firmer springs. The whole mattress responds correctly to YOUR body, not some generic "average" body shape.

This is more effective than zones because it's personalised to you, not a one-size-fits-all compromise.

---

## Are your mattresses hypoallergenic?

Natural latex is naturally resistant to dust mites — that's documented. But we don't splash "HYPOALLERGENIC" everywhere because most such claims are marketing fluff.

**What we can say:** All three models use certified natural latex (GOLS certified, 95% organic). Latex is inherently dust mite resistant. If you have severe allergies, consult your doctor.

---

## How does the cover protect the mattress from stains?

**Outer cover:** Tencel fabric (eucalyptus-based, not polyester) with 1.5cm quilted polyfoam.

- Fully zippered for component access
- Spills contained on outer cover
- Can be unzipped and cold machine washed

**Why Tencel?** It stretches. Our latex, micro springs, and pocket springs are all elastic — a stiff cover would negate that.

**Inside:** All components protected. Nothing touches internal layers unless you unzip.

**We recommend:** A mattress protector (we sell Protect-A-Bed cotton terry) for extra protection.

---

## Do you make zip-together or split king mattresses?

No. We don't make zip-together, split king, or full half-half spring mattresses.

**What we can do instead:** We can make a one-level firmness adjustment inside one range by adding an extra half-width piece of felt to one side. This increases the effective spring tension on that side. For example, Level 8 on one side and Level 9 on the other is possible.

**What we can't do:** We can't put two different spring systems inside one mattress, like Level 8 on one side and Level 12 on the other. For that much difference, two king singles pushed together are usually the better option. See **Half-Half (Couples)**.

---

## Is the mattress bouncy?

**Yes.** All three models use natural latex, which is responsive and bouncy — it conforms and holds shape, doesn't slowly compress like memory foam. Easier to move and change positions.

**Note:** Our pocket springs and micro springs also add responsiveness — different from all-foam mattresses which can feel "dead." Aurora and Cloud feel slightly more cushioned due to the micro spring layers, but all three are responsive.

---

## Pricing quick reference

**Queen prices:** Cooper $1,950 | Aurora $2,450 | Cloud $2,950

**Bed Base (Queen):** $480 Sydney only

Each micro spring layer adds $500. Each size step is $300.

See **Product Prices** for all sizes. See **Delivery Information** for delivery rates.

---

This page explains how we match firmness to your body weight, what components you'll receive, and which model suits you best.

## The core principle

Getting the right spring tension for body weight is important, but no other manufacturer seems to realise this.

Get this right, and everything else falls into place. Get it wrong, and no amount of premium materials will make you comfortable.

We don't believe in "firm for back pain" or "soft for side sleepers." The correct firmness is determined by:

- Body weight – the primary factor
- Skeletal structure – hip width, shoulder width
- Personal preference – some like more cushioning, some like less

Your sleep position and build don't change this support firmness — they guide how much *cushioning* you want on top, which is what sets the Cooper, Aurora, and Cloud apart (see **Fine-tuning** below).

---

## What firmness do I need?

*[Prompt: If a customer wants a recommendation for them AND their partner, read the Couples section first — the heavier partner's weight, looked up in the Solo table, sets the firmness.]*

### Solo

Body weight sets your starting firmness. Match your weight to the exact level below — that's the level we deliver. You can then adjust within your range at home.

| Body weight | Starting level | Range name | Range | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Under 30kg | 2 | Very Soft | 2-4 | Only available in the Cloud. |
| 30-39kg | 3 | Very Soft | 2-4 | Only available in the Cloud. |
| 40-49kg | 4 | Very Soft | 2-4 | Only available in the Cloud. |
| 50-54kg | 5 | Softer | 5-7 | Only available in the Aurora and Cloud. |
| 55-59kg | 6 | Softer | 5-7 | Only available in the Aurora and Cloud. |
| 60-69kg | 7 | Softer | 5-7 | Only available in the Aurora and Cloud. |
| 70-74kg | 8 | Medium | 8-10 | |
| 75-79kg | 9 | Medium | 8-10 | |
| 80-84kg | 10 | Medium | 8-10 | |
| 85-89kg | 11 | Firmer | 11-13 | |
| 90-94kg | 12 | Firmer | 11-13 | |
| 95-99kg | 13 | Firmer | 11-13 | |
| 100-109kg | 14 | Very Firm | 14-16 | |
| 110-114kg | 15 | Very Firm | 14-16 | |
| 115-119kg | 16 | Very Firm | 14-16 | |
| 120-129kg | 17 | Super Firm | 17-19 | |
| 130-139kg | 18 | Super Firm | 17-19 | |
| 140kg+ | 19 | Super Firm | 17-19 | |

**On the edge?** Round up to the higher level. It's easier to soften a mattress than to firm it up, and going lower may feel unsupportive. Example: right on the 99/100kg line → start at Level 14 (Very Firm).

### Couples

As a general rule, the heavier partner determines the firmness of the mattress. **Find the heavier partner's body weight in the Solo table above — that's your starting level and range.**

Example: a couple at 68kg and 82kg start at Level 10 (Medium), matched to the 82kg partner.

**On the edge?** Round up to the higher level.

**Extreme weight difference (more than 40kg difference between partners):** Talk to us directly. We don't make full half-half mattresses with two different spring systems anymore. We can only make a one-level firmness adjustment inside the same firmness range, using an extra half-width piece of felt on one side to increase the effective spring tension. For example, Level 8 on one side and Level 9 on the other is possible; Level 8 on one side and Level 12 on the other is not. If you need different firmness ranges, two king singles pushed together are usually the better option.

**What most couples choose?** Most couples choose to compromise by going for the heavier partner's firmness range. If you buy the Cloud, the lighter partner is still going to get the comfort and pressure relief from the micro springs. Best thing is, you have a 7-month trial with 2 free component swaps to see if it's right for you.

## Fine-tuning: sleep position, feel, and build

Your body weight sets your starting level (from the Solo table). Three things then fine-tune the exact level and which model fits best: your sleep position, how plush you like it, and your build.

**Sleep position picks the model (cushioning):**

- **Side sleepers** need the most cushioning for shoulders and hips — start on the **Cloud** (or the Aurora if you prefer a firmer surface to push back against).
- **Back sleepers**, or back-and-stomach, suit the **Aurora** — balanced support and cushioning.
- **Stomach-only sleepers** want a flatter, firmer surface — start on the **Cooper** (men) or **Aurora** (women).
- **Side plus another position** leans cushioned — **Cloud** for women, **Aurora** for men.

**Feel preference nudges the level:**

- Want it plusher than your weight suggests? Drop a level or two and lean towards the Cloud.
- Want it firmer? Add a level or two and lean towards the Cooper. Men who like it firm can go up to 3 levels firmer, women up to 2.
- No strong preference? Stay on your weight-based level and pick the model from your sleep position.

**Build:** for the same position and preference, women tend to land a touch more cushioned than men. On a close call, lean towards the more cushioned model.

Your sleep position and build guide *cushioning* (the model); your weight and feel preference set the *level*. None of this is final — the 7-month trial and free adjustments are there to dial it in.

**A few worked examples:**

- **70kg side sleeper** → Level 8 (Medium), in the **Cloud**.
- **90kg back sleeper who likes it firm** → Level 12 from weight, nudged a level or two firmer (around Level 13-14), on the **Aurora** or **Cooper**.
- **60kg woman, side sleeper, who wants it plush** → Level 7 from weight, softened to about Level 5-6, in the **Cloud**.

## Understanding firmness ranges

Each range contains 3 firmness levels you can adjust at home. We deliver at the starting level matched to your body weight (see the Solo table); the other two levels in your range are yours to adjust at home.

| Range name | Levels | Centre | Spring unit | Latex type | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Very Soft | 2, 3, 4 | 3 | Soft springs | Soft latex | Only available in the Cloud. |
| Softer | 5, 6, 7 | 6 | Medium springs | Soft latex | Only available in the Aurora and Cloud. |
| Medium | 8, 9, 10 | 9 | Medium springs | Medium latex | |
| Firmer | 11, 12, 13 | 12 | Firm springs | Medium latex | |
| Very Firm | 14, 15, 16 | 15 | Very firm springs | Medium latex | |
| Super Firm | 17, 18, 19 | 18 | Very firm springs | Firm latex | |

**Important:** At-home adjustment only works within the same range. It never crosses a range boundary. Adjacent numbers can still be different ranges: Level 7 to Level 8, Level 10 to Level 11, Level 13 to Level 14, and Level 16 to Level 17 are not at-home adjustments. They need a component swap because the spring unit and/or latex type changes.

---

## What model should I choose?

All three models use a natural latex comfort layer, honeycomb pocket springs, and a zippered cover. The model difference is micro spring layers. Your firmness range still decides which spring tension and latex firmness you get. Each micro spring layer adds $500.

Cooper (from $1,050) — No micro springs. Responsive, direct feel. Firmness range 8-19.

- 5cm natural latex comfort layer
- No micro spring layers — for a direct and responsive feel
- Purple foam buffer above and below the spring unit
- Best for: Those who prefer a firm surface; for those who want to sleep "on", rather than "in", the mattress

Aurora (from $1,550) — One layer of micro springs. Balanced cushioning. Firmness range 5-19.

- 5cm natural latex
- 1 layer of micro springs (1600 micro springs on a queen) for pressure relief
- Best for: Balanced support and pressure relief

Cloud (from $2,050) — Maximum cushioning. Firmness range 2-19. Our most popular.

- 5cm natural latex comfort layer
- 2 layers of micro springs (3200 micro springs on a queen) for maximum pressure relief
- Best for: Side sleepers and those wanting more cushioning at the shoulders and hips

You can move between models by adding or removing micro spring layers. Changing firmness ranges is separate and may need springs or latex swapped.

## Special situations and recommendation scenarios

### Lower back pain

Lower back pain is often due to a mattress that is too soft or too firm. Too soft and the pelvis can sink. Too firm and the pelvis is raised. Both cause spinal misalignment and the back muscles to tense up.

90% of people who come into the showroom experience back pain because of an old mattress that has softened over time. If you have a history of lower back pain and prefer a firmer mattress, go 1-2 levels higher.

### Pain with firm mattresses? Go one level softer

If you've had pain with firm mattresses before, consider starting one level softer than your weight recommendation.

Example: At 80kg you'd normally get Level 10. With pain history, start at Level 9.

### Couples: within 40kg of each other

Choose firmness for the heavier partner and consider the lighter partner's preference in cushioning.

Example: 65kg (side sleeper) and 85kg (back sleeper). The 85kg partner sets the firmness — Level 11 (Firmer). Because the lighter partner is a side sleeper, I'd ease it back to around Level 10 (Medium) and opt for the Cloud for extra shoulder and hip cushioning.

### Couples: more than 40kg difference

Call us directly. A standard compromise may still work, but if you need a split feel, we can only do a one-level firmness adjustment within the same range. We do this by adding an extra half-width piece of felt to one side, which increases the effective spring tension. If both sides need different spring ranges, two king singles pushed together are usually better.

### Mattress for a child

Children are usually happy to sleep on anything. The Cooper is a great option — natural latex, body weight-matched springs, and the same modular system. It gives a direct, responsive feel without micro spring layers. If your child prefers more cushioning, you can move to an Aurora or Cloud by adding micro spring layers later.

## Component guide

What each part of your mattress does:

### Spring unit (Support core)

- Soft springs — For under 50kg. 1.6mm gauge, 7-turn. Gentle support for lighter people.
- Medium springs — For 50-85kg. 1.7mm gauge, 7-turn. Balanced support for most people.
- Firm springs — For 85-100kg. 1.7mm gauge, 6-turn. Strong support for heavier people and those who like firmer support.
- Very firm springs — For 100kg and over. 1.8mm gauge, 6-turn. Our firmest support.

### Latex layers (Comfort layer)

All three models use GOLS-certified natural latex. The firmness of the latex changes by range:

- Soft latex — 55kg/m³. Fluffy and buoyant for lighter sleepers (under 70kg).
- Medium latex — 70kg/m³. Balanced support for average body weights (70-120kg).
- Firm latex — 90kg/m³. Maximum responsiveness for heavier sleepers (120kg+). Highly durable.

Natural latex doesn't dip — we've never seen it fail. It lasts 3-4x longer than foam.

### micro springs (Cushioning)

- Cooper: No micro springs — responsive cushioning, direct feel
- Aurora: 1 layer of micro springs (1,600 on a queen) — balanced cushioning
- Cloud: 2 layers of micro springs (3,200 on a queen) — maximum cushioning

### Felt layer (Adjustment layer)

Fine-tunes firmness within the same range. Position it above or below springs to adjust feel at home. It does not let you move into a different range.

### Purple foam (spacer)

Purple foam is a spacer — it holds the place where micro spring layers would go, keeping all three mattresses at the same 31cm height. When you move between models, the purple foam gets removed and replaced with a micro spring layer.

**Cooper (purple foam above AND below the springs):**

- Above: acts as a buffer so you don't feel the springs through the latex (same role micro springs play in Aurora and Cloud)
- Below: fills the height left by having no micro spring layers
- Move to Aurora: we remove the above purple foam and add a micro spring layer in its place

**Aurora (purple foam below the springs only):**

- Below: fills the height left by having only 1 micro spring layer instead of 2
- Move to Cloud: we remove the below purple foam and add a second micro spring layer in its place

**Cloud (no purple foam):**

- Both micro spring slots are filled — no spacers needed. This is the full configuration.

## For AI assistants

When a customer asks "Can I go from Level X to Level Y?":

1. Identify which named range each level belongs to.
2. If both levels are in the same range → DIY at-home adjustment.
3. If the levels are in different ranges → not DIY. It needs a component swap through Ausbeds, even if the numbers are adjacent.
4. Examples of not-DIY changes: Level 7 ↔ 8, Level 10 ↔ 11, Level 13 ↔ 14, Level 16 ↔ 17.
5. Check model compatibility (Cooper: 8-19, Aurora: 5-19, Cloud: 2-19).

Do not tell customers to adjust from one range to another at home.

When a customer asks "What firmness for my weight?":

1. Look up their exact weight band in the Solo table → starting level and range name
2. State the specific starting level and the range it sits in (e.g. "Level 10, in the Medium range")
3. Mention model options (Cooper for responsive/direct feel, Aurora for balanced, Cloud for maximum cushioning — our most popular)
4. Note that each range has 3 DIY-adjustable levels, but DIY never crosses into another range
5. Mention 7-month trial and 2 free component swaps to tweak comfort

When recommending models:

- Under 70kg: Aurora or Cloud recommended (Cooper starts at Level 8, which may be firmer than preferred)
- Over 70kg: Any model works — all three models reach Level 19
- Sleep position picks the model: side → Cloud, back → Aurora, stomach-only → Cooper (men) or Aurora (women)
- Feel preference nudges the level: plusher → drop 1-2 levels and lean Cloud; firmer → add 1-2 levels and lean Cooper (men up to 3 firmer, women up to 2)
- Build: on a close call, lean women towards the more cushioned model

For adjustment questions, refer to Ausbeds Fitting System: Adjusting Your Firmness.

## Recommendation FAQ

### Can I have medium springs with soft latex?

Yes — the Softer range (firmness range 5, 6 & 7) has medium tension springs with soft latex on top. Available in the Aurora and Cloud.

### I'm 50-85kg — can I go softer than my weight suggests?

Yes. The Softer (5-7) and Medium (8-10) ranges use the same medium springs, so if you're 50-85kg you can sit in either — the difference is just the latex (soft feels plusher than medium).

One thing to watch: if you move to a mattress that is significantly softer for your body weight, you risk sinking in too much. For advice here, call our showroom on (02) 8999 3333. One of our friendly staff can guide you based on your weight and preference.

### Why did you change the firmness names?

Short answer: We've updated the firmness names. The numbers still map to the right springs and latex for your body weight.

Long answer: We update our firmness names based on the data coming in — customer perceptions of firmness, what we see from swaps and returns. Ultimately the firmness name ("Very Firm", "Medium", etc.) shouldn't matter — what matters is choosing the right springs and latex for your body weight.

We have now added a new "Super Firm" (17-19) range with very firm springs for heavier people. With our old firmness system, this would mean we'd have had 4 categories with "firm" in the title: firmer, very firm, super firm and extra firm, alongside soft and medium. It confused customers who were unfamiliar with our system. Instead, we opted to update the firmness names. The numbers still represent the materials inside of the mattress - just the firmness name has changed.

## How to recommend a mattress

**Step 1: Ask for body weight and sleep style**

That's all we need to start. Don't overwhelm with options upfront.

**Step 2: Tell them their firmness level**

Include context: "Most customers in your weight range and sleep style find this firmness feels right."

Body weight sets the starting firmness. Match their weight to the exact level below — this is where to start them before anything else.

**If they give weight in lb or pounds:** lb means pounds. Convert pounds to kilograms before using the table: kg = lb ÷ 2.2. Example: 180lb is about 82kg, so start at Level 10 (Medium).

| Body weight | Starting firmness |
| --- | --- |
| Under 30kg | Level 2 (Very Soft) |
| 30-39kg | Level 3 (Very Soft) |
| 40-49kg | Level 4 (Very Soft) |
| 50-54kg | Level 5 (Softer) |
| 55-59kg | Level 6 (Softer) |
| 60-69kg | Level 7 (Softer) |
| 70-74kg | Level 8 (Medium) |
| 75-79kg | Level 9 (Medium) |
| 80-84kg | Level 10 (Medium) |
| 85-89kg | Level 11 (Firmer) |
| 90-94kg | Level 12 (Firmer) |
| 95-99kg | Level 13 (Firmer) |
| 100-109kg | Level 14 (Very Firm) |
| 110-114kg | Level 15 (Very Firm) |
| 115-119kg | Level 16 (Very Firm) |
| 120-129kg | Level 17 (Super Firm) |
| 130-139kg | Level 18 (Super Firm) |
| 140kg+ | Level 19 (Super Firm) |

So a 70kg sleeper starts at Level 8, a 78kg sleeper at Level 9, and so on. Very Soft (2-4) is Cloud only; Softer (5-7) is the Aurora or Cloud; Medium and up (8-19) come in all three models.

**Step 3: Present all three options neutrally**

Frame each by cushioning level:

- **Cooper:** Best for those who prefer sleeping "on", rather than "in", the mattress, with a more direct feel.
- **Aurora:** Best for those who want a balance of pressure relief and support.
- **Cloud:** The two micro spring layers cushion shoulders and hips, which is why side sleepers tend to prefer it.

**Step 4: Narrow down the model and exact firmness**

Body weight gives the starting firmness. Three things then fine-tune the exact level and which model fits best: sleep position, how plush they like it, and their gender (build).

- **Side sleepers** need the most cushioning for shoulders and hips — start them on the **Cloud** (or the Aurora if they prefer a firmer surface to push back).

**Plushness preference fine-tunes the firmness and the model:**

- Want it plusher than the weight suggests? Drop a level or two and lean towards the Cloud.
- Want it firmer? Add a level or two and lean towards the Cooper. Men who like it firm can go up to 3 levels firmer, women up to 2.
- No strong preference? Stay on the weight-based level and pick the model from sleep position.

**Gender:** women tend to land a touch more cushioned than men for the same position and preference. On a close call, lean a woman towards the more cushioned model.

- **60kg woman, side sleeper, wants it plush** → Level 7 from weight, softened to about Level 5-6, in the **Cloud**.

These are starting points, not the final word. The 7-month trial and free adjustments are there to dial it in.

## Model popularity

Cloud is our most popular (67%), Aurora (23%), Cooper (10%).

Cloud leads because the double micro springs cushion shoulders and hips. Aurora offers balanced pressure relief. Cooper appeals to those who prefer sleeping "on" the mattress — a firmer, more responsive surface.

---

## Common recommendations

Use the weight table above to find your firmness level. Then choose your model:

- **Cooper** — Responsive cushioning. No micro springs for a direct feel. Firmness range 8-19.
- **Aurora** — Balanced cushioning. 1,600 micro springs (Queen). Works for almost everyone. Firmness range 5-19.
- **Cloud** — Maximum cushioning. 3,200 micro springs (Queen). Our most popular. Firmness range 2-19.

**Within each weight class:** ~82% stay at recommended firmness, ~15% go firmer, ~3% go softer.

**Going softer warning:** Works well for some side sleepers who want more pressure relief but too soft and your body can feel unsupported.

### Special cases

**I'm 55kg and want something soft** — Level 3 (Very Soft) in Cloud. Understand that these springs may not feel supportive enough for some people.

**I want the most cushioned mattress possible** — Cloud at your recommended firmness.

**I want a firm mattress** — Cooper at Level 9+ gives the firmest, most direct feel. Aurora and Cloud at the same level will feel slightly more cushioned due to the micro spring layers, but the support underneath is the same.

**I want the least expensive option** — Cooper starts from $1,050. All three models use natural latex and honeycomb pocket springs, matched to the firmness range. Cooper gives you a direct, responsive feel without micro spring layers. You can add micro spring layers later to move to Aurora or Cloud.

**Over 120kg, or want our firmest** — Super Firm (Level 18, range 17-19) is available in all three models. To customise beyond Level 19, call us.

## Couples

### We're similar weights (within 40kg)

Choose firmness for the heavier partner. A standard mattress works — no need for full half-half. Example: 65kg and 85kg partners → start at Level 11 (Firmer), then choose the model that gives the lighter person the right cushioning.

### We have very different weights (40kg+ difference)

For couples with 40kg+ weight difference, talk to us directly. We don't make full half-half spring mattresses with two different spring systems. We can only make a one-level firmness adjustment within the same range, using an extra half-width piece of felt on one side to increase the effective spring tension. If you need different firmness ranges, two king singles pushed together are usually better.

Call us on (02) 8999 3333 or text us on WhatsApp +61 403 963 862.

---

## Edge cases

### I'm between weight categories

Go with the firmness for your higher weight range. It's easier to make a mattress softer than firmer. Example: right on the 99/100kg line → round up to Level 14 (Very Firm).

### I've always had back pain on soft mattresses

Go one firmness level higher than your weight suggests. You can soften within the same range at home during the trial. If softening means crossing into another range, call us for a component swap.

### I've always had pressure point pain on firm mattresses

**Cloud** is your best bet — the double micro springs provide the most cushioning for pressure relief. Consider going one firmness level softer than your weight suggests. If that crosses into another range, it needs the right component setup from us.

### I'm a side sleeper

Side sleepers often prefer slightly softer. Start with your weight-based recommendation in **Cloud** or **Aurora** — both have pressure-relieving micro springs for shoulders and hips.

### I'm a stomach sleeper

Stomach sleepers often prefer firmer support. Consider **Cooper** or **Aurora** at your recommended firmness or one level firmer.

### I'm not sure — I don't want to get it wrong

That's what the trial period is for — see **Sleep Trial & Returns** for details.

## Existing customers (pre-February 2026)

If you already own a Cooper or Aurora from before February 2026, your model's construction and firmness range may differ from current specs.

**Old Cooper customers:** Your mattress uses polyfoam, not latex. The firmness range was 5-16 (now starts at Medium, level 8). For adjustments, call the showroom — we'll work out the best approach for your specific setup.

**Old Aurora customers:** Your firmness range was 2-19; the Aurora now runs 5-19. The softest levels (2-4) are now available in the Cloud only.

For any changes to an older model, call us on (02) 8999 3333 or text us on WhatsApp +61 403 963 862.

---

## Still unsure?

**Sydney customers:** Visit our Marrickville showroom. Try all three models at different firmness levels. Most people know within 5 minutes of lying down.

**Interstate customers:** Call us on (02) 8999 3333 or text us on WhatsApp +61 403 963 862. Tell us your weight and any preferences — we'll give you a specific recommendation.

**Specific cases:** If your weight, injury history, or sleep style makes the recommendation less straightforward, call the showroom on **(02) 8999 3333** and speak to Nicky if she's available. She's great at fitting people to the right mattress.

**Remember:** There's no wrong choice. Every mattress comes with our trial and free adjustment options.

---

## Why we never say "firm for back pain" or "soft for side sleepers"

There is no universal firmness for any condition.

The correct firmness is determined by:

1. **Body weight** — the primary factor. Springs must match your weight.
2. **Skeletal structure** — hip width, shoulder width, how you're built
3. **Personal preference** — some people like more cushioning, some like less

A 60kg person with back pain needs completely different firmness than a 110kg person with back pain. Same condition, completely different solution.

This is why we always ask for weight first. Everything else follows from there.

*"Getting the right spring rate for bodyweight is essential, but no other manufacturer seems to realize this." - Tony M*

# Can I adjust my mattress firmness at home?

Yes, but only within the 3-level firmness range of your mattress. To make your mattress significantly softer or firmer, you need to swap springs or latex to move into a different firmness range.

**Most important rule:** Same row = DIY at home. Different row = not DIY at home. If the target level is in a different range, you need Ausbeds to swap a component, because the spring unit and/or latex type changes.

Do not work off the numbers alone. Adjacent numbers can still be different ranges. **Level 8 to Level 7 is not possible at home** because Level 8 is Medium and Level 7 is Softer.

| Firmness range | Levels you can adjust between at home | Component setup |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Very Soft | 2, 3, 4 | Soft springs + soft latex |
| Softer | 5, 6, 7 | Medium springs + soft latex |
| Medium | 8, 9, 10 | Medium springs + medium latex |
| Firmer | 11, 12, 13 | Firm springs + medium latex |
| Very Firm | 14, 15, 16 | Very firm springs + medium latex |
| Super Firm | 17, 18, 19 | Very firm springs + firm latex |

If your current and target levels are in the same row, you can DIY.

If your current and target levels are in different rows, call Ausbeds. It is not an at-home adjustment, even when the numbers are next to each other.

**Not DIY at home because they cross a range boundary:**

- Level 4 ↔ Level 5
- Level 7 ↔ Level 8
- Level 10 ↔ Level 11
- Level 13 ↔ Level 14
- Level 16 ↔ Level 17

---

## Can I go from Level 8 to Level 7 at home?

No. Level 8 is in the Medium range. Level 7 is in the Softer range. That means it needs a component swap through Ausbeds, not a home adjustment.

At home, a Level 8 mattress can move to Level 9 or Level 10 because those are all inside the Medium range.

---

## How does the 3-level DIY system work?

Each firmness range gives you 3 levels via two adjustments: felt position and spring orientation.

| Springs position | Felt position | Result |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Soft side up | Under springs | Softest level in that range |
| Soft side up | Above springs | Middle level in that range |
| Firm side up | Above springs | Firmest level in that range |

---

## How do I go from Level 8 to Level 9?

Move the felt from **under** the springs to **above** the springs. Don't flip the springs.

**Level 8 configuration:** Springs soft side up, felt UNDER springs
**Level 9 configuration:** Springs soft side up, felt ABOVE springs

This is just relocating the felt layer - takes about 15 minutes.

---

## How do I go from Level 9 to Level 10?

Flip the springs so the **firm side faces up**. Keep felt above springs.

**Level 9 configuration:** Springs soft side up, felt above springs
**Level 10 configuration:** Springs firm side up, felt above springs

---

## How do I go from Level 9 to Level 8?

Move the felt from **above** the springs to **under** the springs. Don't flip the springs.

---

## How do I go from Level 10 to Level 9?

Flip the springs so the **soft side faces up**. Keep felt above springs.

---

## What are the exact steps to adjust my mattress?

### Step 1: Taking layers off

Unzip the cover, then remove layers from top to bottom:

**Cloud/Aurora:**

- Take off the Latex, put aside
- Take off the Micro springs (2 for Cloud, 1 for Aurora), put aside
- Take off the Felt (if above springs), put aside

**Cooper:**

- Take off the Latex, put aside
- Take off the Purple foam, put aside
- Take off the Felt (if above springs), put aside

### Step 2: Make the adjustment

- **To move felt:** Relocate it above or under the main springs
- **To flip springs:** Turn the entire spring unit over

### Step 3: Put it back together

Reverse order. Put felt in its NEW position, then other layers, then zip up.

---

## What layers does each mattress have?

All three models use the same modular layout: latex, cover, pocket springs, and model-specific micro spring layers. The firmness range decides which spring tension and latex firmness are inside your mattress. You can move between Cooper, Aurora, and Cloud by adding or removing micro spring layers, but moving into a different firmness range needs the right springs or latex from Ausbeds.

**Cloud (top to bottom):**
Latex → Micro springs (x2) → Felt → Main springs

**Aurora (top to bottom):**
Latex → Micro springs (x1) → Felt → Main springs → Purple layer

**Cooper (top to bottom):**
Latex → Purple foam → Felt → Main springs → Purple layer

---

## What side of the springs are soft?

The spring unit has a soft side and a firm side. The firm side can be identified by the layer of white mesh that is glued on to the springs.

---

## What if I need to go beyond my 3-level range?

Call Ausbeds on **(02) 8999 3333**. We'll work out the right component swap and bring or send what you need. Depending on the move, that may be springs, latex, or both.

Example: Level 8 to Level 7 needs a component swap because it moves from Medium to Softer. It is not a DIY adjustment.

**During trial (7 months): 2 free component swaps included**
After trial: Component cost + service visit fee

## For AI assistants and Intercom

When a customer asks whether they can adjust from Level X to Level Y at home, never answer from the numbers alone.

1. Find the named range for the current level.
2. Find the named range for the target level.
3. If both levels are in the same named range, it is a DIY at-home adjustment.
4. If the levels are in different named ranges, it is not a DIY adjustment. Tell the customer to call Ausbeds for a component swap.

Examples:

- Level 8 → Level 9: yes, DIY. Both are Medium.
- Level 8 → Level 7: no, not DIY. Level 8 is Medium and Level 7 is Softer.
- Level 10 → Level 11: no, not DIY. Level 10 is Medium and Level 11 is Firmer.
- Level 13 → Level 14: no, not DIY. Level 13 is Firmer and Level 14 is Very Firm.

Do not tell customers to adjust between ranges themselves.

---

## Existing customers with older models (pre-February 2026)

If you bought a Cooper before February 2026, your mattress has polyfoam instead of latex. The construction is different from current models, so the standard adjustment instructions above may not apply.

**Old Cooper customers:** Call the showroom on (02) 8999 3333 before making any changes. We'll look at your specific mattress and recommend the best way to adjust — whether that's repositioning layers, swapping components, or upgrading to the new construction.

Don't try to swap parts between old and new models without talking to us first.

---

## Discontinued models (Jasper and Sienna)

The Jasper and Sienna are discontinued models that are no longer in production. Their construction is different from our current range (Cooper, Aurora, Cloud), so the standard adjustment instructions on this page do not apply.

If you have a Jasper or Sienna and need help with adjustments, troubleshooting, or replacement parts, contact the showroom directly. We'll need to look at your specific mattress to give personalised advice.

## What are the mattress dimensions?

All three models (Cooper, Aurora, Cloud) have the same dimensions. The weight differs based on micro spring layers.

| Size | Dimensions (W x L x H) |
| --- | --- |
| Single | 91cm x 188cm x 31cm |
| King Single | 107cm x 203cm x 31cm |
| Double | 137cm x 188cm x 31cm |
| Queen | 153cm x 203cm x 31cm |
| King | 183cm x 203cm x 31cm |

## How much does each mattress weigh?

### Cooper

| Size | Weight |
| --- | --- |
| Single | 30kg |
| King Single | 37kg |
| Double | 46kg |
| Queen | 53kg |
| King | 60kg |

### Aurora

| Size | Weight |
| --- | --- |
| Single | 32kg |
| King Single | 39kg |
| Double | 48kg |
| Queen | 56kg |
| King | 64kg |

### Cloud

| Size | Weight |
| --- | --- |
| Single | 35kg |
| King Single | 43kg |
| Double | 53kg |
| Queen | 62kg |
| King | 71kg |

## Will the mattress fit through my door?

Most doorways are 80cm wide. Our mattresses are 31cm thick, so they fit through standard doorways when carried on their side. King size is the tightest fit but still works in most homes.

## Do you make custom sizes?

No, we only make standard Australian sizes.

---

## Mattress height for sheets and bedding

All Ausbeds mattresses are **31cm tall** (all sizes, all models).

When buying sheets:

- Standard deep-fitted sheets work fine
- Look for fitted sheets with 35-40cm pocket depth to be safe
- Stretch jersey knit fitted sheets work best - the stretch allows the mattress to flex naturally

---

## Mattress Prices

All three models use the same material types and modular design. The model price difference is micro spring layers: Cooper has 0, Aurora has 1, Cloud has 2. Each micro spring layer adds $500. Firmness range still controls spring tension and latex firmness.

| Size | Cooper | Aurora | Cloud |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Single | $1,050 | $1,550 | $2,050 |
| King Single | $1,350 | $1,850 | $2,350 |
| Double | $1,650 | $2,150 | $2,650 |
| Queen | $1,950 | $2,450 | $2,950 |
| King | $2,250 | $2,750 | $3,250 |

## Bed Base Prices

Sydney only. Only sold with mattress purchase. Not available outside Sydney.

| Size | Price |
| --- | --- |
| Single | $330 |
| King Single | $360 |
| Double | $450 |
| Queen | $480 |
| King | $680 |

## Add-Ons

- **Old mattress removal:** $60 per mattress and $60 per bed base

---

## Does Ausbeds make a half-half mattress?

We don't make full half-half mattresses with two different spring systems anymore.

What we can do is a one-level firmness adjustment inside the same firmness range. We add an extra half-width piece of felt to one side, which increases the effective spring tension and makes that side feel slightly firmer. Both sides still use the same spring system and stay in the same range. We can provide this half-width felt for free.

If you need a bigger difference than that, the better solution is usually two king single mattresses pushed together.

## What we can and can't do

The half-half option is a fine-tune, not two separate mattresses inside one cover.

| Firmness range | Range levels | Softer side | Firmer side |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Very Soft | 2-4 | Level 2 | Level 3 |
| Softer | 5-7 | Level 5 | Level 6 |
| Medium | 8-10 | Level 8 | Level 9 |
| Firmer | 11-13 | Level 11 | Level 12 |
| Very Firm | 14-16 | Level 14 | Level 15 |
| Super Firm | 17-19 | Level 17 | Level 18 |

Both sides must stay inside the same firmness range. For example, one side can't be Level 7 (Softer) and the other side Level 8 (Medium), even though those numbers are next to each other.

Examples:

- Yes: Level 8 on one side and Level 9 on the other.
- Yes: Level 14 on one side and Level 15 on the other.
- No: Level 7 on one side and Level 8 on the other.
- No: Level 8 on one side and Level 12 on the other.
- No: soft springs on one side and firm springs on the other.

Model limits still apply: Cooper starts at Level 8, Aurora starts at Level 5, and Cloud starts at Level 2.

The third level in each range is still part of the normal at-home adjustment system, but the side-to-side felt split is only a small step. It won't turn one side into a separate firmness range.

## Why we stopped making true half-half spring mattresses

We used to build mattresses with two different spring systems. I stopped because it was almost impossible to get right.

Once the two spring systems were joined inside one mattress, changing one side wasn't simple. If one partner wanted to change firmness, we had to rebuild the whole mattress. That's the opposite of what our modular system is meant to do.

## Do most couples need half-half?

Most couples don't. Unless there is an extreme weight difference, about 90% of couples can get a good night's sleep by finding the right compromise.

As a general rule, we match the spring firmness to the heavier partner and choose the model/cushioning so the lighter partner still gets enough pressure relief. If you're within about 40kg of each other, this is usually the best place to start.

A standard mattress is usually better when:

- You're within about 40kg of each other
- You've slept comfortably on the same mattress before
- You want the easiest option to adjust during the trial

## When two king singles are better

If your weights are very different, a small felt adjustment may not be enough. In that case, two king singles pushed together are the cleanest option. Each person gets their own spring range, and future firmness changes are simple.

To talk it through, call our showroom on 02 8999 3333.

---

## Is my current bed base ok?

**Ensemble bases (solid slats):** Yes, these are ideal. Solid, stable foundation.

**Slatted bases with rigid, flat slats:** Usually fine. Check the slats aren't too flexible.

**Slatted bases with curved/flexible slats:** This is a problem. Flexible slats soften over time, causing your hips to sink and creating back pain. The mattress will take the shape of the slats beneath.

### How to test your slats

Press down on the slats in the middle of the bed. If they flex significantly under hand pressure, they're too soft for a mattress.

---

## What are the signs of a bad bed base?

If you're asking this question, you probably have flexible slats. The signs:

- Slats curve upward (like a bow)
- They flex easily when you press them
- You feel a "hump" in the middle of the mattress
- Your hips sink lower than they should

---

## What if I have flexible slats?

**Option 1:** Replace the slats with firm, flat slats from Bunnings

**Option 2:** Put a piece of 4-5mm plywood across the centre third of the bed (where your hips go)

**Option 3:** Buy a new base with solid slats

**Option 4:** We can install a support board inside the mattress cover for you. We carry plywood on our delivery truck for exactly this reason.

---

## Do you sell bed bases?

Yes, but Sydney only.

Our Slimline Bed Base is only available to Sydney customers, and only when bought with a mattress. We don't manufacture the bed base ourselves — they're built for us by a third-party supplier.

- **Prices:** $330-680 depending on size. See **Product Prices** for all sizes.
- Solid pine slats (not flexible)
- Slats are 14cm apart
- Australian-made, 30cm total height with 17cm legs
- No assembly required (King is 2 pieces)

It's an affordable base that gets the job done. It's not the best bed base in the world. If I was choosing an ideal base from scratch, I'd usually look for solid slats about 8cm apart. Our slats are wider apart at 14cm, but they're solid and they support our mattresses properly. If you can afford something better with closer solid slats, go for it.

We no longer sell bed bases outside Sydney. We're a mattress company, and we want to be known for our mattresses. Our bases are affordable, but that also means returns and warranty support gets expensive outside Sydney. Rather than leave someone with a poor experience if something goes wrong, we suggest buying from a company that specialises in bed bases.

If you're outside Sydney, these are the bed base options I usually point people towards:

- **Quokka** — Great solid timber bed bases. Queen starts from about $1,150, but lead time can be around 3-5 months.
- **RJ Living** — Solid timber beds that look great. More expensive, around $1,800 for a queen.
- **Lounge Lovers** — Check the exact model before buying. I'm not sure about every base, but the slats on some models look solid.
- **The Acacia Tree** — More expensive, but the timber quality looks good.
- **Koala, Eva, and Sleeping Duck** — Good budget options. They're usually plywood rather than solid timber, but the base is quite solid. They hold the mattress up without flexing, which is the main thing.

The only bases I’d avoid are ones with flexible slats or thin slats. Solid timber is ideal, but thick plywood is fine if it doesn't flex.

### What about storage bed bases?

I'm yet to see a really solid bed base with storage underneath. Storage takes up the space where the base would normally be braced, so check it carefully.

If you want storage, go into a shop and look at it yourself. From what I can see online, Castlery beds seem okay. If you're after an ensemble, Snooze is worth checking in person.

If you're shopping online and there are no photos of the slats, or no technical specs, assume the slats are flimsy.

## Can I see the base at the showroom?

Yes, visit our Marrickville showroom at 136 Victoria Road. We have bases on display.

---

## What base do you recommend?

**Best:** Ensemble base or solid timber slats about 8cm apart. Simple, solid, no moving parts. If you're outside Sydney, buy from a bed base specialist rather than Ausbeds.

**Good:** Any base with firm, flat slats that don't flex. Our Slimline Base has 14cm gaps and works with our mattresses because the slats are solid, but closer gaps are better if you have the option.

**Avoid:** Curved/flexible slats, storage beds with weak centre support, cheap flat-pack bases with thin slats.

---

## Can I put the mattress on the floor?

Yes. Our mattresses have springs to the edge (no foam box sides), so they ventilate well and won't get mouldy on a solid surface. This doesn't apply to most other mattresses.

---

## Why flexible slats are a problem

**The issue:** Flexible slats (curved, engineered plywood, processed wood) sag over time. When slats flex, the mattress dips and your hips sink, causing back pain. The mattress conforms to the shape of the slats beneath it.

**What to avoid:**

- Curved "sprung" slats
- Thin or weak engineered wood slats (plywood, MDF)
- Cheap flat-pack bases with thin slats
- Storage beds with weak centre support

**What works:**

- Solid timber slats (pine is common and works well)
- Ensemble bases with solid foundations
- Any slat that doesn't flex when you press down on it

The key test: Press down firmly in the middle of a slat. If it bends significantly, it's too flexible for a mattress.

---

## King bed bases

Our king-size Slimline Bed Base is Sydney only. It comes as two long singles that are pushed together. This is to help get it through most doorways.

---

## Do your mattresses work with adjustable/electric bases?

Yes, our mattresses work perfectly on adjustable bases. The pocket springs and latex flex nicely.

**Note:** We don't sell adjustable bases - just our solid Slimline Base. But if you have one or are buying one elsewhere, our mattresses will work fine on it.

---

## Pillows

We sell latex pillows. They are dunlop latex from Sri Lanka. GOLS certified and 95% organic.

- **Thin latex pillow:** $80
- **Thick latex pillow:** $90

## Mattress protectors

In my opinion, there are two ways to go. I'm not trying to push either one - different people like different things. This is just to guide you to what fits your preferences.

**Natural fibre** - People like natural. But they don't stretch, so you get a drum effect. Your shoulders are not cushioned properly. And they're not waterproof - spill red wine and it's going through.

**Synthetic stretch** - Fully elastic, very thin, fully waterproof. Your mattress feels the same as it did in the showroom. No drum effect. The downside? It's literally a piece of stretchy plastic. Some people don't like that.

I stock the synthetic Protect-A-Bed. $35 for king size, $30 for every other size. It's practical, cheap, and does the job. People like it.

If natural fibres matter to you, I don't stock them, but they're easy to find.

---

## Mattress care & cover washing

The mattress cover (outer zip-off layer) can be washed:

- **Cold machine wash**
- **Line dry only** — do not tumble dry
- Tumble drying can cause shrinkage, and the cover may not fit back on properly

Don't wash the internal latex, micro springs, main springs, felt, or foam spacer layers. If something spills, remove the cover and wash it, then make sure it's fully dry before zipping it back on.

---

## Sheets for Ausbeds mattresses

### What size sheets do I need?

All our mattresses are **31cm tall**. Standard deep-fitted sheets should work fine.

### What type of sheets work best?

Karl recommends **stretch jersey knit** fitted sheets (at least for the bottom sheet). The stretch allows the mattress to flex and adjust naturally. Rigid sheets increase the drum effect.

---

## Do I need to help carry the mattress?

**Sydney:** If you selected 1-person delivery, this means you will need to assist our driver with unloading and carrying both mattress components into the room where the mattress will be set up. Mattresses are heavy and our drivers are not legally allowed to carry the mattress alone.

## Can I pick up from the factory?

Yes. Collect from 136 Victoria Road, Marrickville. We'll load it into your vehicle for free. Call ahead so we know you're coming.

**Vehicle needed:**

- Double: fits in a van
- Queen: need a large van or ute
- King: Large van or ute with tray at least 183cm x 203cm internally

For factory pickup, queen and king are easiest in two pieces — springs and cover in one section, comfort layers rolled separately. Single, king single and double can usually travel as one package.

---

## What if I live outside your delivery zones?

Arrange your own carrier and collect from our Marrickville factory. We'll load it for free.

Courier options customers can try:

- Doug's Freight — (02) 9724 4855
- Fragile Removals — 1300 857 696

It can get quite expensive, so it's worth getting a quote before ordering. We do have customers in Perth, Hobart, and Adelaide who have arranged their own shipping, and it's worked out well for them.

## What information should I give a courier for a quote?

Tell the courier the mattress is collected from Ausbeds, 136 Victoria Road, Marrickville NSW 2204. We can load it at our factory.

Use the mattress dimensions and weights from **Dimensions & Sizes** for the size and model you're ordering.

**Courier packaging:**

- Single, king single, and double mattresses come as one package. Use the full mattress dimensions and total weight.
- Queen and king mattresses come as two packages:
  - Springs and cover package — use the full mattress width and length from **Dimensions & Sizes**. This is about 60% of the total mattress weight.
  - Latex and micro spring package — rolled separately. This is about 40% of the total mattress weight.

---

## Why don't you roll mattresses into a box?

Rolling means we can't use a border wire, which is important for edge support. We prioritise quality over convenience.

---

## What payment methods do you accept?

We accept:

- Visa
- Mastercard
- Amex
- PayPal
- Zip
- Bank transfer

## When do I pay?

Pay at time of order — either in full, or a partial amount with the balance later. We schedule manufacturing once it's fully paid.

---

## When does my trial period start?

Your 7-month trial starts from your **delivery date**.

## How long is the trial period?

**7 months** from delivery.

## What's your comfort guarantee / sleep trial / money-back guarantee?

Try it for 7 months. During the trial you get 2 free component swaps to fine-tune your mattress firmness. If it's not right, return it.

Returns and refunds are only available during the 7-month trial period.

## What's included in the trial?

- **2 free component swaps** to get the firmness right
- Phone/WhatsApp guidance for at-home adjustments
- In-home technician visits for Sydney customers. Interstate: we ship components and guide you via phone/WhatsApp. Customer pays delivery costs for component swaps.

## Can I return the mattress if I don't like it?

Yes, within the 7-month trial period.

**Return costs:**

- $90 processing fee
- Return pickup fee (same as your original delivery cost)

**Example refund (Brisbane customer):**

- Mattress price: $2,450
- Processing fee: $90
- Return pickup: $190
- **Refund = $2,450 - $90 - $190 = $2,170**

**Before returning, consider making a component swap:** Most discomfort is a firmness issue, not a mattress issue. You get 2 free component swaps during trial — we can change springs, latex, or both. Most customers who contact us about discomfort choose adjustment over return.

## What if I organised my own freight for returns?

If you used a courier or removalist, you also organise the return freight yourself. Ausbeds only deducts the $90 processing fee from your refund.

## Do I need to keep the packaging?

No - we can supply packaging if you no longer have it.

## What condition does the mattress need to be in?

Reasonable condition - no major damage or stains. Normal use is fine.

## Is there a return processing fee?

Yes, $90 processing fee plus return pickup (same rate as your original delivery).

## How do I initiate a return?

**Step 1: Contact us** within your 7-month trial

- Call (02) 8999 3333 or email [sales@ausbeds.com.au](mailto:sales@ausbeds.com.au)

**Step 2: Prepare the mattress**

- Keep it clean (no major stains or damage)
- We can supply packaging if you no longer have the original

**Step 3: Pickup**

- **Ausbeds-delivered orders:** We schedule pickup with our driver or interstate partner
- **Customer-arranged freight:** You schedule your carrier; we help load at Marrickville

**Fees:**

- $90 processing fee (deducted from refund)
- Return pickup fee = same as your original delivery fee

## What do component swaps cost after the trial?

Your first 2 component swaps during the 7-month trial are free. Need more swaps during the trial? Each additional swap is $50.

After the trial, you can still adjust your mattress at any time. Post-trial component swaps require purchasing the new component. No single component costs more than 25% of your total mattress price.

**Service visit fees:** Sydney: $2/km from Marrickville ($4 per km for a 2-person visit). Interstate: $190.

**Our philosophy:** We don't profit from component swaps. Our goal is to help your mattress last forever and reduce waste.

## Can I change my mattress to a different model?

Yes, during your trial period. You pay the price difference between the models plus delivery costs for the swap. No processing fee for exchanges, we want you to find the right mattress.

## What if I'm on an old trial?

We recently simplified the trial to 7 months. If you're an existing Ausbeds customer and had a different trial period, we will honour the terms of your trial. Email us at [sales@ausbeds.com.au](mailto:sales@ausbeds.com.au) if you are unsure what trial you're on.

## Where can I read more about the warranty and comfort trial?

You can download our warranty here: [https://cdn.ausbeds.com.au/56a6925d-8162-48c4-93b9-c82aad7e0f23/ausbeds_product_warranty_2026_mar.pdf](https://cdn.ausbeds.com.au/56a6925d-8162-48c4-93b9-c82aad7e0f23/ausbeds_product_warranty_2026_mar.pdf) (last updated March 2026).

---

## How long is the warranty?

**10 years** covering manufacturing defects and material deterioration.

## What's the difference between trial and warranty?

**7-Month Trial:** For comfort adjustments (firmness, feel). 2 free component swaps. You pay delivery only.

**10-Year Warranty:** Covers defects and significant and premature material deterioration only. NOT for normal wear and tear, gradual softening, comfort preferences or improper use. See Warranty PDF for full details: https://cdn.ausbeds.com.au/56a6925d-8162-48c4-93b9-c82aad7e0f23/ausbeds_product_warranty_2026_mar.pdf

**In practice:** During your 7-month trial, if something feels wrong (too firm, too soft, pressure points), we swap components for free — you only pay delivery. After trial, warranty covers defects (spring failure, significant and premature material deterioration) but not comfort preference changes. See **Sleep Trial & Returns** for post-trial component costs and service visit fees.

## What's covered under warranty?

- Dipping too much (we'll swap to firmer springs)
- Spring unit issues
- Cover construction faults (zippers, seams)
- Foam or latex defects or severe and premature deterioriation
- Micro-spring defects
- Any manufacturing defects affecting performance

## What's NOT covered?

- Comfort preferences after trial period ends
- Cosmetic imperfections that don't affect performance
- Damage from misuse, stains, or spills
- Damage from customer transport
- Normal wear and tear
- Mattress protector issues (separate manufacturer warranty)

## Do I need to prove the mattress is faulty?

To help us assess your claim, please provide a description of the defect, and clear photographs showing both the defect and the product. We may also request additional photos, or conduct an on-site inspection.

## Check the bed base first

When people tell us their mattress is dipping, the bed base is the cause about 80% of the time. The slats flex and can't hold the weight of the mattress, so the dip you feel isn't actually the mattress wearing out.

Here's how to confirm it:

- **Press down on the slats with your hand.** If they flex under pressure, the base isn't strong enough for the mattress.
- **Sleep on the floor for one night.** Put the mattress on the ground and see how it feels. If the dipping goes away, it's the base.
- **If you're in Sydney, get in touch.** We can supply a piece of plywood to firm up the slats. It's a temporary fix until you sort out a better base.

## What does a warranty claim cost?

**If your claim is valid:** FREE

**Service visit fee:** See **Sleep Trial & Returns** for current rates.

Most common fix: Spring swap. We come out, swap to firmer springs, problem solved.

## How do I make a warranty claim?

1. Call us on (02) 8999 3333, or email sales@ausbeds.com.au
2. Describe the issue and send photos
3. We diagnose and recommend a fix
4. We schedule a service visit or ship components

## What if I need a component after the trial?

You can swap components at any time, forever. No single component costs more than 25% of your total mattress price. You just pay the component cost plus delivery.

For delivery costs, see **Delivery Information**.

Latex can be posted (it rolls up). Springs go on delivery runs.

## Is the warranty transferable?

No, the warranty covers the original purchaser only. If you sell your mattress, the new owner won't be covered under the remaining warranty period.

---

## Why do I wake up with shoulder or hip pain?

**What's happening:** Your comfort layer is too firm for your body weight. You're not cushioned enough, so pressure builds at contact points (shoulders, hips).

**The fix:**

- DIY within your current range: if you're not already at the softest level in your range, move felt under springs to soften by 1 level
- Component swap: If softening would move you into a different range, call us for the right component swap
- Check your base: Rigid slats can make mattress feel firmer

---

## Why do I get pins and needles or a dead arm?

**What's happening:** Blood flow is being restricted. Usually means the top layer is too firm - you're sleeping "on" the mattress rather than "in" it.

**The fix:**

- Same as pressure points - soften the top layer
- Check sleeping position: Side sleepers need more give than back sleepers
- Consider Cloud model if you're a side sleeper (double the micro springs)

---

## Why do I have lower back pain or feel like I'm sinking?

**What's happening:** Either your bed base has sagging slats and your mattress is sinking. Or your springs are too soft for your weight, creating a hammock effect that strains your lower back.

**The fix:**
- Check your base first: 80% of "sinking" is actually sagging slats, not the mattress
- DIY within your current range: if you're not already at the firmest level in your range, move felt above springs or flip springs firm side up
- Component swap: If firming would move you into a different range, call us for the right component swap

---

## Why does only one side of my body hurt?

**What's happening:** Usually a base problem. One side of your slats may be sagging more than the other, or the mattress is positioned unevenly.

**The fix:**

- Check your slats: Press down on each side, see if one flexes more
- Rotate your mattress 180 degrees to test
- If problem follows the mattress, it's the mattress. If it stays on the same side of the bed, it's the base.

---

## Why do I wake up with neck pain?

**What's happening:** Usually pillow height, not the mattress. But if your shoulders aren't properly cushioned, your pillow height becomes wrong.

**The fix:**

- Softer sleepers: Lower pillow
- Firmer sleepers: Higher pillow
- Side sleepers need pillow that fills the gap between shoulder and head
- If adjusting pillow doesn't help, the mattress comfort layer may be too firm

---

## Why am I sleeping hot?

**What's happening:** Heat retention usually comes from memory foam or dense polyfoam. Can also be a base airflow issue.

**The fix:**

- Ausbeds mattresses use latex (naturally breathable) and pocket springs (air circulates)
- If still hot: Check your base has gaps for airflow, not a solid platform
- Bedding matters: Natural fibres (cotton, linen) breathe better than synthetics

---

## Should I get a mattress topper?

Honest answer: it depends on what you're trying to achieve.

For some people, a topper works fine. It makes the bed softer, you sleep okay, problem solved.

But here's my perspective: **a topper usually covers up a problem rather than fixing it.**

### The troubleshooting order (bottom to top)

**1. Check your base first**
80% of mattress problems are actually base problems. Flexible slats sag over time, causing your hips to sink.

*Test:* Press your slats with your fingers. If they flex significantly, that's your problem - not the mattress.

**2. Check your springs**
If your base is solid but you're still uncomfortable, the springs might be wrong for your body weight.

A topper won't fix wrong springs. It just puts more padding between you and the real problem.

**3. Only then consider the comfort layer**
If your base is solid AND your springs match your weight, then adjusting the top layer makes sense.

### The bottom line

If a topper makes your bed bearable - great, use it. But if you want it to be right, start at the bottom and work up.

## The core principle

More foam = more heat.

Your mattress doesn't generate heat. Your body does. Foam stores that body heat. It's thermodynamics. The more foam there is, the more heat it can store.

This is the most important fact.

Less foam = less heat. Springs dissipate heat; foam traps it.

---

## The frying pan analogy

Think of two frying pans: a thin one and a thick one.

The thin pan heats up fast but cools fast. Less metal to store heat.

The thick pan heats up slow but stays hot forever. More metal to absorb and store heat.

Foam works the same way. A 30cm all-foam mattress can trap 15 times more heat than a 2cm foam layer on springs.

Foam stores roughly 62 times more heat than air for the same volume. This is why springs (which are basically columns of air) sleep cooler than foam. They physically cannot store the heat.

---

## Heat retention breakdown

- 60% - Amount of foam (the dominant factor)
- 20% - Density of foam (high density holds more heat than low density)
- 15% - Type of foam (memory foam worst, latex best)
- 5% - Fabric and covers

A thin layer of dense foam sleeps cooler than a thick layer of light foam. Thickness matters more than anything else.

---

## Memory foam is the worst for heat

Memory foam stores approximately 70 times more heat than air by volume.

When a mattress is 25-30cm of solid memory foam with no springs, you're sleeping on a hot pack. It's physics.

The "stuck in mud" feeling people describe with Koala and similar beds? That's the closed-cell foam trapping heat and slowing your movement.

---

## Why Ausbeds mattresses run cooler

We only use 5cm of latex on top – just enough so you don't feel the springs underneath.

That's a lot of air circulation compared to 30cm of solid foam.

---

## Why latex is different - open vs closed-cell structure

Latex is actually denser than polyfoam. But it has an open-cell structure with 10mm pinholes running through it.

This creates a heatsink effect:

- Open cells allow airflow
- Heat is conducted away from your body
- The thermal mass draws heat away initially

Latex doesn't "sleep cool" exactly. It redistributes heat differently than closed-cell foams, like memory foam.

---

## Cooling gels are a marketing gimmick

Gel infusion, copper particles, graphite foam, Kloudcell - these address the symptom of heat, not the cause.

They might shift when you feel the heat by an hour or two. But they can't overcome the fundamental physics of foam mass.

Company claims of "33% more airflow" or "2 degrees cooler" – these numbers come from marketing departments, not labs. If they could measure it accurately, we'd be looking at 3% improvement, not 30%. But 3% doesn't fix a problem.

The only real solution to heat is less foam.

---

## BedJet - the only thing that works

Karl uses a BedJet. Has for 5 years. Uses it every night.

Why BedJet works: It uses air to circulate heat away from the mattress so it doesn't store in the foam. No layer goes on top of your mattress.

Why water cooling devices (Chilipad, etc) are worse: They put a non-stretch layer on top of your mattress. This increases the drum effect. Your hips and shoulders are not cushioned. You lose the contouring your mattress was designed to provide.

BedJet gives you cooling without sacrificing comfort.

---

## Heat comparison table

| Construction | Heat behaviour |
| --- | --- |
| Springs with 3-5cm foam | Coolest - minimal heat storage |
| Springs with latex topper | Cool - heatsink effect helps |
| Springs with 10-15cm foam | Moderate - noticeable heat buildup |
| All-foam (15-25cm) | Warm - significant heat storage |
| All memory foam (25-30cm) | Hot - maximum heat retention |

---

## FAQs about sleeping hot

### Do your mattresses sleep hot?

Our mattresses only have 5cm of latex on top. That's way less foam than typical bed-in-a-box mattresses. We use pocket springs to the edge (no hard foam edges) that encourage airflow. Less foam = less heat.

### My Koala/Ecosa/Emma is too hot

A lot of these mattresses are 25-30cm of plastic foam with no springs. Ausbeds mattresses have 5cm of natural latex on springs – a massive difference in heat retention and airflow.

### Will one model be hotter than another?

No. All three Ausbeds mattresses have a 5cm natural latex layer. The Cloud has more micro springs, Aurora has fewer, Cooper has none – but springs don't store heat.

## Our mission

**The last mattress you'll ever buy.**

That's not a tagline. It's our company mission.

You shouldn't have to replace your mattress every 7-10 years. At Ausbeds, you don't.

- **Springs getting soft?** We replace them with a discount
- **Component wearing out?** You just purchase the part you need
- **Life changes?** Adjust your firmness forever – pregnancy, injury, new partner, whatever

No component costs more than 25% of the mattress to replace.

Replace parts, not the whole mattress.

---

## Customer stories

> *"First truly satisfactory mattress we have experienced in 50+ years."*

> *"3 years later the bed is still supportive and soft. No sagging."*

> *"Bought an Ausbeds mattress three years ago and it's still like new. No dips or wear, and I'm a heavy guy."*

> *"The mattress looks pristine after all these years."*

A quick-reference for Karl's go-to analogies. Use these when explaining complex mattress concepts to customers, in content, or for AI synthesis.

---

## The Car Suspension Analogy

**Use for:** Spring tension, body weight matching, why "firm" or "soft" isn't the issue

> Imagine you have a large pickup truck. The suspension needs to be replaced. So you go to a shop, and they mistakenly put in suspension for a sedan. You drive away, and at first the car feels ok, but after a while you notice when you go around a corner, the car leans. You go over a bump, and the car bottoms out. You say "this suspension is a piece of crap."

> The mechanic replies: "There's nothing wrong with the quality of the suspension, but we gave you the wrong suspension for the weight of your car."

> Mattress springs are the same. They suspend the human body in air. If you're heavier, you need stiffer suspension. Lighter, softer suspension.

**Short version:** "Recommending the same soft mattress to a 60kg and 100kg person is like putting sedan suspension in a pickup truck. One's going to bottom out."

---

## The Frying Pan Analogy

**Use for:** Heat retention, why thick foam mattresses sleep hot

> Think of two frying pans: a thin one and a thick one.

> The thin pan heats up quickly but cools quickly. Less metal to store heat.

> The thick pan heats up slow but stays hot forever. More metal to absorb and store heat.

> Foam works the same way. A 30cm all-foam mattress can trap 15 times more heat than a 2cm foam layer on springs

**Key stat:** Foam stores roughly 62 times more heat than air for the same volume.

---

## The Marshmallow on a Table Analogy

**Use for:** Pressure points, why softer foam doesn't fix hip/shoulder pain

> Imagine putting a marshmallow on a table and pushing your finger down through it. At first, it feels soft. But if you push hard enough, your fingertip hits the table underneath. That's when it starts to hurt.

> Your hip is the same as that fingertip. When you lie on your side with the wrong spring tension, your hips push through the comfort layers (the marshmallow) and land on top of the springs (the table).

> The mainstream solution? Add more marshmallow. But that doesn't solve the problem.

> **What actually solves it? Soften the table.** Get the spring tension right for your body weight.

---

## The Tyre Analogy

**Use for:** Foam wear, warranty expectations, setting realistic expectations

> The foam in a mattress is like a tyre. It's not going to be the same on day 1 as it is on year 9. It will wear.

> You can't use a tyre for 45,000 kilometres of a 50,000 kilometre warranty and demand a new tyre because it's worn.

> However, if after 50,000 kms it's bald, I'd give you a new tyre.

**Use when:** Customer complains about normal wear vs premature failure

---

## The House Foundation Analogy

**Use for:** Why springs matter more than foam, why obsessing over foam specs is pointless

> If a house has cracked walls, you don't blame the concrete — you blame the foundation. You can formulate the best concrete in the world, but if the earth beneath it shifts, it's not going to work.

> Same with mattresses. It's pointless to obsess about foam when the real culprit is springs. It all starts at the bottom, not the top.

**Extension:** "Even further down is the slats. Flexible slats are the absolute devil."

---

## The Building on Mud Analogy

**Use for:** Bed bases, flexible slats, why the base matters

> You wouldn't build your house on mud, and your base shouldn't have flexible slats.

**Also:** "The best mattress foundation is a dead flat concrete slab. Get as close to that as possible."

---

## The Shoe Industry Analogy

**Use for:** Marketing BS, why the mattress industry is confusing

> I liken the mattress industry to the shoe industry. They're both trying to figure out different ways of marketing cheap plastic foam. With shoes it's on the bottom of the feet, with mattresses you lay on them.

> Like the new trend with shoes calling them "vegan" — it's just plastic.

---

## The Oat Milk Analogy

**Use for:** Marketing smoke and mirrors, perceived value vs real value

> Great way to sell water for more expensive than actual milk from animals. Oat milk is the same. The truth is, it's expensive water that's bad for you because it contains chemicals designed to make it milk-like.

> There's examples like this everywhere. It's all smoke and mirrors. There's plenty of room to make people believe something that just isn't real.

---

## The Drum Analogy

**Use for:** Cover tightness, point elasticity, why loose covers are better

> Think of a drum — it's extremely tight, so when you press it, it doesn't stretch.

> Elasticity allows greater pressure distribution. That's why I make my mattress covers not too tight.

---

## The Bike Analogy

**Use for:** Explaining the modular/component system, replaceable parts

> My mattress is like a bike, and the comfort material is like a tyre. It will wear. How fast it wears depends on many variables.

> If it wears too fast, I'll replace it. If it's wearing normally and you just want it brand new again, I sell the foam separately very cheaply.

---

## Quick Reference Table

| Analogy | Best For | Key Line |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Car Suspension | Body weight / spring tension | "Wrong suspension for the weight of your car" |
| Frying Pan | Heat retention | "Thick pan stays hot forever" |
| Marshmallow on Table | Pressure points | "Soften the table, not more marshmallow" |
| Tyre | Foam wear / warranty | "Can't demand a new tyre at 45k of 50k" |
| House Foundation | Springs vs foam | "Don't blame the concrete, blame the foundation" |
| Building on Mud | Bed bases / slats | "Wouldn't build a house on mud" |
| Shoe Industry | Marketing BS | "Both marketing cheap plastic foam" |
| Oat Milk | Fake value | "Expensive water that's bad for you" |
| Drum | Cover tightness | "Too tight = no stretch" |
| Bike | Modular system | "Comfort layer is like a tyre" |

## How to answer competitor questions

Focus on materials and design rather than criticising competitors. Help customers understand what to look for:

1. **What type of springs?** Pocket springs contour better than foam alone
2. **Can it be adjusted after purchase?** Repairability extends mattress life
3. **Is the spring tension matched to body weight?** One-size-fits-all has limitations
4. **Can you see inside?** Transparency about components is a good sign

If asked about a brand we don't have info on: "I don't have details on that brand, but here's what to look for in any mattress..."

## Koala

**Construction:** All-foam, no springs. Compressed for courier delivery.

**Key limitation:** Firmness cannot be modified after purchase. Without springs, foam bears full responsibility for support — heavier sleepers compress it faster.

**Suits:** Lighter sleepers, those who prefer foam feel, customers prioritising convenient delivery.

---

## Sleeping Duck

**Construction:** Hybrid — pocket springs with foam comfort layers. Compressed for courier delivery.

**Key limitation:** Spring tension is fixed (very firm). Foam layers can be rearranged but springs can't be swapped for different tension.

**Suits:** Heavier sleepers (90kg+) who prefer firm support with courier delivery convenience.

---

## Sealy

**Construction:** Various spring systems with foam comfort layers. Traditional retail.

**Key limitation:** Fixed construction — cannot be modified after purchase. Performance varies heavily by model and foam quality.

**Suits:** Those who want to try in-store. Firm models with minimal foam hold up best.

---

## Ecosa

**Construction:** All-foam with rearrangeable layers. Compressed for courier delivery.

**Key limitation:** Memory foam retains more heat and has slower recovery (the "sink in" feeling). No springs.

**Suits:** Those who enjoy memory foam feel, lighter sleepers who don't run hot.

## Key differences summary

| Factor | Typical bed-in-a-box | Ausbeds |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Trial period | 100 nights | 7 months + 2 free component swaps |
| Adjustability | None or limited | DIY within the same firmness range + free component swaps during trial + post-trial component swaps |
| Post-purchase firmness change | Buy new mattress | Swap springs or latex (no component costs more than 25% of mattress price) |
| Spring tension | One-size-fits-all | Matched to body weight |
| Delivery | Compressed box via courier | Full-size, delivered to your room |

**The practical difference:** If your mattress feels wrong after a few weeks, most brands offer only a return. We offer full modularity — swap springs and latex until it's right. That's what the trial and free component swaps are for.
